Just finished watching, I cried so hard when emperor died. I thought despite him not trusting her, it is understandable (as she did lie about gao yang), and it was cruel of her to tell him that she never forgot about li shi min, that was really cruel of her. If you think about it he has given up more for her.

I think some of the stuff she has caused herself… I think they make her into a very sacrificial character. If she had only told him that GaoYang was the real person that killed her daughter and caused the miscarriage, he would understand her… I think it was very cruel of her to tell him that too, but I think there was a purpose (there’s always a purpose I guess), to make him hate her or something, but I don’t understand why too

If she told him why she killed gao yang then it would mean she knew empress wang was innocent. I think empress wu is just annoyed that emperor wouldn’t speak to her cos of Ming yue’s death, she is annoyed that emperor not trust her so she threw him hateful words. It was so cruel I can’t get over it. I was hoping in the end she would tell him that she loves him before he died. Till the end he still loves her deeply.

After all episodes, being Mei Niang is so bad.
She did all to help country, to help her family and many people.
But she always gets misunderstanding situation or hate words …

One thing we learn is … Do not break the promise!!!!
Po po… You are the most cruel!!!!

I know! I wondered if her feelings towards him have changed or something to say something like that and i wonder if its true. Li shi min was her first love and she only started with li zhi for revenge..

Well how I see it, she does love li zhi. He was the last person shown during her flashbacks. She only said those spiteful things because he didn’t trust her, she said she would of killed Ming yue anyways (I doubt it) as she couldn’t even look when Ming yue drank the poison. Li zhi believed her to be that kind of person, to be swayed easily and think his wife can do such things. If I was empress wu I would of said the same thing back and tell him to believe what he wants. She’s basically saying think what you want I don’t give a crap anymore. But I’m very unhappy with the ending. I find issues have not been resolved.

Correct me if I’m wrong, my mandarin isn’t that good but did she think for a moment that the emperor had an edict for her to die with him after his death? Because she seemed a bit shocked when the edict said she can still govern until the prince is capable?

I think she did’ think Li Zhi will give her throne, so when she know from edict, she is shocked. I means Li Zhi loves her so much.
And I think she feel guilty that she never said she loves him.
It doesn’t mean she not love Li Shi Men but after all happened, she knows Li Zhi takes care her well(compare with others).

Correct me if I am wrong
PS. I love first part of Empress of China more(when she was young)

I think so… I think that she thought that until they had that moment in front of the fireworks. I think they were all shocked from that edict because making a woman a regent is very uncommon

Yes, she did think that the emperor agreed to have her die with him (as far as I could tell and remember). Someone gave her his writing (I think) which said that he granted special permission for her to be buried with him, and she interpreted that as him granting her son’s request. He later mentions that he hoped to someday be buried with her (the wording heavily implies he means in the far future) while they are watching fireworks and seems to know she thought differently. It wasn’t until his funeral is it confirmed that he knew all along she asked the general for help and misinterpreted his words, but didn’t say anything about it and just handed his last edict to the general and saved her from death. Isn’t that sad?

I have watched this drama but I don’t really understand some episodes and something. How much older Mei Niang was than LiZhi? And why Mei Niang didn’t admit that she loves Li Zhi and after his death she was repented? It was so sad that they didn’t had kissing scenes ‘EVEN Li Zhi and Ming yue had aahrg >:{!! Did Li Zhi know at the end that Man Yue killed his son?

Omg,same here!! I’m watching “EOC” until episode 29 (TVB version) and can’t stand the storyline anymore and then happened to stumbled across your blog. Dude, reading your recaps make me feels that Empress of China wasn’t too bad after all…at least it make me laugh!!
Btw, Legend of Zhen Huan is a must watch!! But if you haven’t watched Bubujingxin before then I will suggest watch BBJX first. Coz after Legend of Zhen Huan every historical period dramas seems blah…(IMHO).

Just completed viewing Empress of China (only 75 episodes in M’sia)? Loved tje drama series – with its impressive costumes, excellent cinematography and of course, the magnetic screen presence of Aarif Rahman & Fan Bing Bing – a most attractive pair of screen lovers by far! Hope to see more of Aarif & FBB in the near future. Hope also that EoC will win big awards @ international film festivals – Cannes, Asian etc.
I do feel sad for the Emperor – having lost his brothers + sister and his own children are so blaaaah useless and even tried to bump him off – his disappointments in life but luckily he has Mei Niang supporting and comforting him throughout his life – even in his early years, she was always there for him … a real loving romance!
The 50 episodes with the older emperor was a drag – the directors should have focused more on Mei Niang and the young emperor as a gradual build-up on her character as Empress of China. All in all, EoC is an impressive piece of creative artistic work. Congratulations!!

    Hi Deerlee!

I recommend “Cuo Dian Yuan Yang” (no English title).

The series star Qi Ji (evil but handsome :3 Japanese guy from “Cruel Romance”) and Zhao Li Ying as the two leads. The two of them are relationship goals, like seriously. When I’m in a bad or low mood, I watch my favourite scenes and instantly feel my spirits heighten.

If you’re up for it, the second series “Xi Dian Yuan Yang” details the love lives of Qi Ji’s onscreen brothers. Song Yi from “The Disguiser” is part of this cast, as is Han Dong from “Sound of the Desert”.

I understand you’ve got work and life going on. Das cool. Maybe one day you could give the series a try, or have a look at key OTP scenes on YouTube. I love it so much; I’ve seen both series twice.

PS: Have you seen “You are my sisters”? I read your “Song in the Clouds” reviews (sass/10 bahaha) and gather you’re a fan of Hawick Lau? He’s in “Sisters”. He and his leading lady are also couple goals. All that banter and spice XDDD

    Hi Deerlee!
I just discovered your blog and I think it’s great 🙂
Would you be open to discussing a potential partnership? I work at Viki, an online video streaming site with several of the shows you’ve written about such as The Imperial Doctress and Chronicle of Life.
From my end, I’m happy to share updates on shows you’re interested in and can find on Viki. Also, many times we receive items (posters, photos, DVDs, notebooks, etc.) that perhaps you’d like to giveaway to your readership during special events.
    Looking forward to hearing back,

Hello, I just randomly stumpled upon your blog when I was looking for information on The Legend of Mi Yue, and I really love your recaps! Especially because I’m having trouble in finding episodes with decent subtitles.
I was therefore wondering if you just gave up on the show or if you are planning on writing more recaps of the drama?

I just started The Princess of Weiyoung. Your blog has been really helpful for when I am confused about characters, Thank You! One thing I am not enjoying is the lack of a strong woman lead, for example, I am on episode 5 and the main woman has been saved three times by the same man plus at least once by someone else. Would anyone be able to suggest a show just like this one but one with a stronger lead woman? I am loving the show besides that…

Thank you. I’ve just read your work about ‘Cruel Romance’ and I’m going to watch ‘Lady and the Liar’ thanks to you.
About the same themes (Shanghaï, the 30s…), I have just finished ‘My legal Husband’ which I found on Youtube (very recent : April 2021). The beginning is very interesting but the ten last episodes were very long and sad…
