抓住彩虹的男人 THE CAGE OF LOVE EPISODE 1 & 2 REVIEW, SUMMARY, AND RECAP

Zheng Shuang ruins every drama that she’s in

I’m back with recaps!!! I’m so happy that a quality drama finally came out!!! My last recap/review was two months ago and I’m excited for finally a drama with some A-Listers and familiar faces. Although the actors/actresses in this drama look so promising (since they’re so famous, and they’ve all been in some good dramas), my first impression is that the plot line is really bland. Yeah Hawick is so good looking, but the fact that he’s paired with the annoying Zheng Shuang for this drama is really a shame. How do you get into their love plotline when you think Zheng Shuang is annoying af? I started getting sick of her in Love Weaves Through A Millennium (it’s awful, please don’t watch it), and I thought it was only that drama that sucked, but it appears that she might be the common factor.

We start off with celebrations at the Jiang family! It’s Papa Jiang’s birthday, so his family is taking care of everything. Meanwhile, Papa Jiang is over at the factory taking care of the family business – which is fabrics.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.32.00 PM

Except Papa Jiang runs into some problems. Production is halted by the head of the law enforcement of the town – accusing Papa Jiang of selling drugs and using the fabric making as a cover-up. Obviously, the law enforcement leader, Wu Hong Da, is setting him up, and they somehow find tobacco somewhere in the factory.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.32.26 PM

And omfg it’s Xiang Han Chuan from Lady and the Liar!!! I finally realized who he looked like now too:

NOW YOU CANNOT UNSEE IT

NOW YOU CANNOT UNSEE IT

BOSCO WONG!!! I always thought he looked like someone, but I couldn’t figure out who until my sister came in and mentioned it. The resemblance is uncanny.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.36.28 PM

“Oh. Shit.”

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.36.29 PM

Anyways, turns out Wu Hong Da wanted Papa Jiang to give up the secret method of making his wonderful fabric, or else Wu Hong Da would press charges for the drug possession and sale. Papa Jiang pretty much said “Uh, no” and fought Wu Hong Da, and ended up falling through a window.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.36.36 PM

Coincidentally his son, Jiang Yue, came by at the same time to the factory to fetch Papa Jiang to come home for the birthday party, but ends up witnessing his death.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.37.37 PM

So us Chinese have a ridiculous saying which is “Admission of guilt from suicide” because our logic is that we are so afraid of the punishment (since we’re guilty), that we commit suicide. OK well in my many years of being alive, I’m pretty sure I haven’t heard people who would rather commit suicide rather than run if they’re guilty, but that’s just me.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.37.33 PM

ANYWAYS, under the same logic, law enforcement assumed that Papa Jiang committed suicide because he actually committed the crime, and so they confiscated his house, kicked the whole Jiang family out.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.39.47 PM

Meanwhile, one of the factory workers that worked under Papa Jiang was screwed. Papa Jiang was a really nice man that was willing to lend money – and this woman, she had a very sick husband and she needed money.

Now that Papa Jiang was dead, she couldn’t borrow money from him, nor did she have a job anymore. She couldn’t pay for her sick husband’s medicine.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.42.11 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.42.24 PM

Soooo anyways, we now meet her son, Zhao Tian, our second male lead. He goes to the rich kids/bullies to beg for money.

The rich kids would only do it on one condition – if Zhao Tian would get on his knees, go through the rich kid’s leg, and bark.

LOL ok, maybe I’ve been in Canada for too long, and I know that it’s culturally really crappy to have to do that, but I’m pretty sure my child self would’ve shrugged at this point and said “Aight man, whatever floats your boat”. Hey, whatever earns you money for your sick dad right?
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.44.49 PM

The bullies end up running away and beating Zhao Tian up. Instead, Zhao Tian gets approached by Jiang Yue, and Jiang Yue gives him a dollar (which is a lot at the time).

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.49.14 PM

Except that by the time Zhao Tian comes home, his mother has already ended his father’s miserable life.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.48.40 PM

I might not be a doctor but I’m pretty sure it’s a terminal illness at this point

Obviously Zhao Tian is scarred for life – so that pretty much sets us up for the second-male lead to be an asshole in this drama (I’ll bet money on it).

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.14.10 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.14.18 PM

Meanwhile, Wu Hong Du gets promoted from his false charges against Papa Jiang – gets even richer.

I knew Zheng Shuang was in this and I prayed to the Drama Gods that she wouldn’t use her own squeaky annoying voice to dub over this, and my prayers were answered. It’s dubbed by another voice actress (with a slightly lesser annoying voice) but god, Zheng Shuang’s acting and character is just dreadful.

I know all actresses try to look pretty for the camera, and I don’t blame them, but it starts to annoy me when I can tell when actresses put on cutesy/pouty looks while they act.

Zheng Shuang is introduced as Cai Hong, Wu Hong Da’s daughter.
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.16.56 PM

BTW when I realized the correlation between her name and the title of this drama I threw up a little in my mouth because of the corniness. If you don’t read Chinese, her name is ‘Rainbow’ in Chinese, and the title’s name is “The Man/Men That Hold On To Rainbow”.

Jeezus.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.17.55 PM

Finally we meet our dear handsome Hawick – Jiang Yu, at a stationary shop. Jiang Yu and Cai Hong both really like a certain pen – Cai Hong wants to buy it for her dad acts like a brat to try to get it by offering triple the money for the pen.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.20.42 PM

Jiang Yu pays for the pen, and Cai Hong unabashedly thinks that Jiang Yu was buying it for her.

Jiang Yu’s like “Um, nope – if you walk away with this pen, I’ll report you for stealing” and leaves. Before he leaves, Cai Hong tries to set up a bet, that if she finds out his name, that she could have this fabulous pen.

The whole time Cai Hong was holding this poor cat, and I’m surprised that the cat didn’t try to scratch her or anything, because Cai Hong was literally throwing her around. Anyways, Cai Hong vows to find Jiang Yu and find out his name to get the pen.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.21.39 PM

Like don’t you have anything better to do? The pen isn’t that great.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.22.14 PM

We now meet old version of Zhao Tian – who works for Wu Hong Da, and likes Cai Hong.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.24.52 PM

Anyways, turns out Jiang Yu was returning to this town after 12 years, and was preparing his own fabric shop to compete with Wu Hong Da (who took over Papa Jiang’s old fabric shop.

There is literally no indication of how they managed to become so rich after all these years again, or where they’ve been, especially since the police confiscated all their belongings.

Jiang Yu’s fabric shop: Yao Sheng.

Wu Hong Da’s fabric shop that he stole: Ling Long.

We also meet Jiang Yu’s little sister. I didn’t mind her at first, but I realize later on in the next few episodes, she’s going to probably be the evil second female lead that everyone hates.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.26.05 PM

Anyways, more backstory – Wu Hong Da really loves Zhao Tian, and is encouraging him to propose to Cai Hong because Wu Hong Da wants them to get married. Zhao Tian feels like he’s not good enough for Cai Hong (and at the same time, gets rejected by her all the time).

It’s insinuated with Zhao Tian’s interaction with the servant that Zhao Tian has other intentions and is manipulating Wu Hong Da.
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.28.27 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.30.13 PM

Wu Hong Da tries to set up an opportunity for Zhao Tian by inviting him over for dinner.

Zhao Tian tries to proprose to Cai Hong yet again, and Cai Hong obviously ‘friend-zones’ him and tells him that she sees him as a brother, and rejects his proposal.

So, I mean, what happens when people get rejected?

The producers decided to reward us with this awkward angsty bath scene where Zhao Tian pours steaming water over himself:

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.33.02 PM

WHY

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.33.39 PM

STOP

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.33.47 PM

SERIOUSLY.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.33.49 PM

DEAR LORD.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.35.25 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.38.14 PM

ANYWAYS, gladly moving on from that. Jiang Yu’s mom, Mama Jiang, has been suffering from depression and has been suicidal since Papa Jiang’s death. After being notified of her sudden disappearance from the hospital, Jiang Yu rushes to look for her.

Coincidentally, Cai Hong remembers some bag/cloth with the hospital symbol that Jiang Yu was holding in the stationary shop, and was looking for Jiang Yu at the hospital with a portrait of him.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.38.47 PM

Obviously, obviously, Cai Hong finds Mama Jiang before Jiang Yu does – and tries to manipulate her into revealing Jiang Yu’s name. Jiang Yu shows up, so that plan goes down the drain, but seriously – this is why they hated rich people back then LOL. Don’t they have better things to do? The pen wasn’t that great. But right – if everyone had better things to do we wouldn’t have a drama. Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.42.48 PM

Anyways – side fact: Zhao Tian was doing something sketchy indeed, and he actually moved Ling Long’s working cash into somewhere else.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.45.58 PM

Anyways, Jiang Yu is chatting with the doctor about his mom’s diagnosis, when they turn around and suddenly:

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.46.17 PM

Ok that escalated quickly

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.46.22 PM
And his mom is considering to commit suicide to relieve her children of her burden.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.47.12 PM

This is where it gets comical. Cai Hong runs in at a glacial iceberg speed and twists the scissors out of Mama Jiang’s hands easily.

This begs the question – why didn’t anyone else do it LOL it was literally like taking candy from a baby.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.47.15 PM

Cai Hong decides to slap Mama Jiang…

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.47.20 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.47.24 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.47.34 PM

And after all of that Cai Hong decides to give Mama Jiang a good parental talk to deter Mama Jiang from trying to commit suicide again – because turns out Cai Hong’s mother committed suicide.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.48.36 PM

Cai Hong leaves semi-dramatically, and at this point, the doctor’s like “Aight just remember to take your meds” and strolls out like it’s no big deal.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.50.23 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.52.22 PM

Jiang Yu thanks Cai Hong for her help, but still refuses to give her the pen (yo it’s just a pen). At the same time, Zhao Tian goes to find Cai Hong again to confess his love to her, and gets rejected yet again.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.54.40 PM

This girl just DOES NOT GIVE UP for a pen. She goes to find Mama Jiang yet again – but not before she throws around her cat before she leaves.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.54.45 PM

“I swear, one of these days I’m going to end that bitch”

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.55.12 PM
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.56.58 PM

Sigh ok she finds out his name – Jiang Yu, except that he still won’t give her the pen. I wouldn’t either – damn girl has too much time on her hands and obviously has lived a life of luxury and spoiledness where no one has ever denied her of anything. Jiang Yu sets another bet – find out his favourite food (c’mon guys this is getting ridiculous).

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.00.00 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.00.12 PM

On his way home, Jiang Yu finds this miserable life of a cat on the side of the street – the cat, Oolong, had run away from Cai Hong (I would too if I was thrown around like that on a daily basis).
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.00.16 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.00.22 PM

Jiang Yu decides to take her home to return back to Cai Hong.

Plot Twist: The owner of the cat was inside the house and Jiang Yu just committed cat-kidnap because all cats look pretty much the same.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.01.04 PM

He proceeds to take it home and meows at the cat (literally, they are both meowing at the cat at one point).

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.08.52 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.08.53 PM

Holy shit at this point I am incredibly weirded out by the incestuous relationship between Jiang Yu and his sister, Fei Fei, because she intentionally tries to get his attention, and looks at him admiringly. I’m like all disgusted and creepy-crawily at this point but this will be explained.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.10.14 PM

Even though Jiang Yu literally met Cai Hong THREE TIMES, he’s developed a crush on her while he plays with the cat and looks at the pen, and has flashbacks about her.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.09.21 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.09.22 PM

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.09.50 PM

Meanwhile, Fei Fei spies on him from the window longingly. Turns out, Fei Fei isn’t his sister, she was adopted. Is this supposed to make it OK? Because this is still weird.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.11.37 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.11.58 PM

Jiang Yu decides to return the cat to her by tactfully just sitting on a busy street and waiting (doesn’t he have something better to do? How are these people so free all the time?).

He finally sees her form afar, and mistakes Zhao Tian to be her boyfriend and Jiang Yu is disappointed. His reaction reminds me of when I found out my old crush had a girlfriend a few years back.

mC7cTyN3

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.19.20 PMGod, that is an awfully ugly cat.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.19.28 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.19.45 PM

Jiang Yu somehow coincidentally sees her walking down the street again, and finds out that Cai Hong doesn’t have a boyfriend. He is ecstatic and invites her over for a date (using the cat as an excuse).

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.22.04 PM

Wow his hair is so dyed – he really couldn’t dye it black for this drama?!

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.22.27 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.23.45 PM

Anyways, it’s Wu Hong Da’s birthday – and pretty much what happens pretty much mirror’s Papa Jiang’s birthday.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.25.07 PM

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.26.54 PM

They’re all preparing the festivities of the birthday while Wu Hong Da goes back to his office to meet up with the owner of Yao Sheng.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.28.30 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.28.45 PM

Jiang Yu reveals himself as Papa Jiang’s son, and that he will do everything in his power to ruin Wu Hong Da’s life.
Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.29.59 PM Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.30.30 PM

Wu Hong Da proceeds to kneel down and says that he’s regretful of everything, which Jiang Yu doesn’t accept (I mean, you killed his father).

Before the episode ends, Wu Hong Da falls out of the window of the building, and falls to his death.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.31.00 PMAt the same time, Cai Hong coincidentally sees everything (like what happened twelve years ago with Papa Jiang). I tried to get a screencap of the death but it was too blurry, but I’m sure we’ll have tons of flashbacks.

Thoughts: So far I think it’s really complicated and semi-boring. But I have been drama-deprived for so long I’m just gonna keep watching (but complain at the same time).

You are back hooray! I like the second male lead but cant stand zheng shuang so gonna read your recaps instead if watching the show! BTW, did you watch the 2013 Mulan with Elanne Kong?

Think I will just read your recaps and give this drama a miss. I absolutely can’t stand Zheng Shuang. Her acting is terrible from watching first episode of love through a millennium, she always pouts, and her voice is just irritating makes me wanna pull my hair out! Honestly! Even Hawick can’t save this drama!

Great to see you back too! I watched the first episode and I can’t help but agree with your recaps. And omg that cat!!!! Sooooo ugly haha. Zheng Shuang voice doesn’t seem to be as annoying as Love weave through a millennium, so it’s a bit more bearable, however she has so many facial expressions which annoy me, I swear she’s constantly pouting and frowning. I can’t help but feel a bit of a déjà vu when watching this, hawick seems to have the same character role as Lady and a liar, the way he is besotted over “rainbow” is similar to how to he was in Lady and a liar. He is playing the seemingly bad guy/but good deep down guy again. And what’s up with that shower scene man lol I know it’s eye candy but that was just cringe worthy haha

I know… there’s actually a lot of comments online about how he’s always a rich powerful guy that’s kind of aloof. Lady and the Liar was actually somewhat good though – Tiffany Tang carried her scenes well.. Zheng Shuang is just a vase.

No need to get so worked up. Let her pout as much as she wants. I find her very attractive and I guess the pouting enhances her good looks. Just that her acting is a little lacking. Maybe you can act better than her. Yet,the producers still continue to cast her. Perhaps, someone who doesn’t like so much pouting should direct her future scenes LMAO.

It’s draggy in the mid section but I thought it was pretty good whenever the 3rd prince appears. Élanne Kong is not the best actress in the world (although better than Zheng Shuang!) but she fits the role of a naive, tender hearted and impetuous Mulan. Made me a fan of Chen Sicheng although he is a bit short and slightly on the messy side for my usual c-drama crushes! The ending kinda slayed me though – realistic but ohh, my heart!

Ooo that actually sounds pretty good.. I really enjoy the story of Mulan and I watched the movie with Vicki Zhao so I’m definitely gonna look this up on maplestage… thanks for the recommendation 😉
