你是我的姐妹 You are my sister vs. 兩生花 The Double Life of Veronique
I binge-watched this drama, so I decided to binge-recap it too. I know, seven episodes in one recap will probably have a lot of details left out, so I labelled it as a highlight/semi-recap because I just wanna add some commentary to the gist of the plotline.
I finally figured out why Hawick was in such a crappy drama (The Cage of Love)… I think he’s becoming the Nicolas Cage of the drama-world and he’s just not even reading the scripts and accepting whatever he can get.
After the very crappy Cage of Love, Hawick has two dramas out at the same time. I’m currently watching so many dramas (I guess they love to release them in the summer time) and my love for Hawick does not extend to watching him for four hours everyday so I picked The Double Life of Veronique because of two shallow reasons 1) This one has a cute child in it, 2) I find this female lead so much more attractive than the three female leads in ‘You are my sisters’.
The name also peaked my interest. Normally Chinese dramas have such fobby and simple english names. The Double Life of Veronique is actually a movie though, about two twins experiencing the same things but not knowing the other one exists… So I’m wondering if the movie would have anything to do with the drama? Anyways, so far I am actually loving the drama because the cute little kid, and I think the female lead and Hawick are so damn cute.
The episode starts with Qin Mo (played by Hawick) stumbling with a head injury and running into traffic. A pregnant woman sadly gives something to the front desk of a hotel to give to someone. This is all very unexplained, so I guess it’ll be a big reveal at the end.
She rides away sadly in a taxi, but not before she starts feeling pain in her abdominal area…
***** SIX YEARS LATER *****
We meet Yan Song and Yan Lang. Yan Song is a single mother and Yan Lang is the cutest and most adorable six year old that you’ll ever see in a drama. I love him more than the child in ‘Autumn’s Concerto’ – he’s so good at acting and he is so damn cute. I bet he’s going to be very handsome when he’s older.
Anyways, Yan Lang fakes a stomach ache to skip school and the concerned Yan Song takes him to the hospital.
Obviously Qin Mo would conveniently wake up from his six year coma at this point and start roaming the hospital. I’m just saying that if he actually didn’t move for six years, his leg muscles and abdominal muscles would have atrophied and deteriorated to a point that he would have to be subjected to a wheelchair ok.
He sees Yan Song, and since she looks like the woman from his memories, he suddenly embraces her, scaring Yan Song, so she shakes him off and falls backwards onto his head.
And obviously Lin Qiao, a famously handsome doctor from a wealthy family comes conveniently during this time from America, just to bump into Yan Song.
I just want to add that in this point of the drama, the musical choices and the shots are amazing… Amazingly corny that is. It’s almost worse than a Bollywood movie because we keep getting dramatic epic shots and very exaggerated head movements/close ups.
*insert dramatic music*
The drama is literally shot entirely like this and you’d think it would be annoying, but I find it hilarious and laugh at it a lot.
Lin Qiao’s girlfriend, Su Qi, conveniently sees Yan Song and Lin Qiao bumping into each other. She becomes insecure and asks him jealous questions since Lin Qiao and Yan Song had one night together.
They have an incredibly toxic and unhealthy relationship together, and Lin Qiao ends up setting a wedding date for both of them even though they obviously have some issues to work out.
Meanwhile, Yan Song goes to check if Qin Mo is ok since she’s the one that knocked him down. He wakes up, sees cute little Yan Lang, scares him, and passes out again. Coincidentally, Yan Lang drops his little notebook during the scare.
Anyways, Su Qi shows up at Yan Song’s workplace and tells her that that she’s bought Yan Song the entire pet shop, on the condition that Yan Song stays away from Lin Qiao.
She apologizes for what happened six years ago, which we see a flashback.
Turns out Yan Song had slept with Lin Qiao after becoming drunk
HELLO girl, I totally got your back. I think that it’s completely justified to lash out at the friend (at least ex-friend) who slept with your boyfriend, regardless if they were drunk. I think Yan Song completely deserved the slap and Su Qi does not need to apologize at all.
I also think Su Qi needs to dump Lin Qiao’s sorry ass.
Meanwhile, Qin Mo manages to find where Yan Song lives from the notebook that Yan Lang left behind in the hospital room when he was scared. He waits outside the apartment, and ends up fainting when he sees Yan Song. They carry him into the apartment (ok, never carry a stranger into your apartment) and asks what he wants.
He tells Yan Song that in his mind, all he can see are memories with her. He is certain that she won’t admit to these memories because she is mad that she had to raise a son alone as a single mother, but Yan Song honestly doesn’t know him.
Meanwhile Yan Lang has cutely taken a liking to our dear Qin Mo (who looks so good in modern clothing too).
When Qin Mo goes to pick up his stuff, he finds his wallet with Yan Song’s picture inside (or a woman that looks exactly like Yan Song). This just reaffirms to Qin Mo that him and Yan Song were not just fantasies, but real memories. Apparently along with that there was some money for him as well.
His hospital bills over the past six years were paid by a mysterious wire (and ahem from my experience in working in a bank, you can actually trace the wire lor, everything has a money trail ok?) and the extra money was money left over from the hospital bills.
Meanwhile we meet Ou-Yang Tang. I guess he becomes entwined into the drama later on… He’s associated to Lin Qiao because Lin Qiao is the main doctor for Mr. Chen, who is the CEO of his company. Mr. Chen is currently in a coma, and Ou-Yang Tang was offering input on the medical procedures.
Lin Qiao sees Yan Lang at the hospital and decide to chat him out. He realizes Yan Lang is six years old – and since it coincides with the time when he and Yan Song had banged, he starts to convince himself that Yan Lang is his son (who seriously does that and jump to those conclusions?!).
Qin Mo is still obsessing over Yan Song and that picture, and he nearly gets himself killed when the photo in his wallet had fallen in front of a car. The car stops to a halt, and Qin Mo meets Xiao Jie, who yells at him for not caring for his safety.
If you’ve ever been in the real world before, you’ll know that drivers that almost kill you/run you over from your reckless behaviour will never ever take you out for lunch afterwards. But in this drama world, Xiao Jie and Qin Mo become ‘friends’ and Xiao Jie gets to know Qin Mo.
Yan Song decides to go to Lin Qiao’s welcoming back party, and I must say, they’re all dressed very atrociously. Who the heck was the costume designer for this drama?!
Seriously, the characters kept saying “Oh, Yan Song, you look so pretty today” and I’m like yo, seriously, that ‘faux-fur’ coat is atrocious.
Su Qi tells Yan Song to keep her distance away from Lin Qiao. When Lin Qiao confronts her on whether Yan Lang is his son, she takes this opportunity to slap him across the face and splash champagne on his face (Su Qi said stay away from him, not assault him).
And Yan Song walks away from the party, just upset. Seriously these modern drama conflicts are sometimes so unnecessary… she could’ve just left the party early to ‘keep her distance from him’.
MEANWHILE Yan Lang skips school and he tries to sneak back home, but he couldn’t get past Qin Mo. On why Qin Mo is outside… he just seriously just waits outside and looks up – I guess he’s just hoping to see Yan Song, but he seriously has nothing better to do.
Qin Mo realizes that Yan Lang is supposed to be in school, and so he throws Yan Lang over his shoulder and forces him to go to school.
With every scene with Yan Lang, I fall more and more in love with this little kid. He’s so smart and adorable – I really hope my kid becomes that cute one day *__*.
Meanwhile, Lin Qiao, being a fucking as*hole, forces Yan Song into his car to interrogate whether Yan Lang is his son. Yan Song repeatedly says no (as she did during the party), and Lin Qiao doesn’t accept it. What’s the point of asking someone something when you don’t believe their answer?! -_-
Long story short with this scene (it is a must watch, but I really cannot convey it in words), Qin Mo tells the class that he’s here for the parent-child activity at school, and participates with Yan Lang. He teaches Yan Lang lessons to not cheat, and to not be afraid to apologize for being late, and they end up winning number one for building a castle out of building blocks together.

I can’t even. This is adorable.
You need to watch this scene. It is absolutely adorable.
Yan Song goes to pick Yan Lang up, except she is notified that he has already been picked up by ‘his father’. Turns out Qin Mo took Yan Lang to eat some fast food, and to chat, but Yan Song thinks that it’s Lin Qiao, since he’s been bugging her for so long about Yan Lang being his son.
I just want to add that Yan Song is probably the worse mother ever. Your son is six years old and you don’t even know that he’s skipping school?! And you don’t show up on time obviously since he can get picked up by strangers. But, I digress.
So Yan Song goes with her friend (Yue Yue, the one with the horrible red hair) to confront Lin Qiao. At that same time Su Qi is there, and she becomes jealous when she finds out that Lin Qiao thinks Yan Lang is his son.
After a long time of confrontation, Yan Song finally accepts that Lin Qiao didn’t take Yan Lang. She goes home (at the right time) to coincidentally find Yan Lang and Qin Mo come home at the same time. At this moment, Lin Qiao and Qin Mo do an awkward face-off as they both think that they’re Yan Lang father.
This is probably so damaging to Yan Lang since so many people are claiming to be his father.
Meanwhile, Qin Mo still periodically hangs out with Xiao Jie – which makes me think – seriously, where does Qin Mo get all this money and where does he live? How does he have so much time to loiter outside Yan Song’s house, and not have to find a job or a way to make ends meet? Or if he already has money, how does he have money??? So many unanswered questions.
Yan Lang has taken a liking to Qin Mo, and really trusts him. Yan Lang has an adorable little phone that is in the shape of a car (it’s a flip-touch screen phone that looks like a toy) and I loooooove it. It’s so cute that when I have a kid I’m going to buy something like that for him too. He calls up Qin Mo to invite him to hang out.
Qin Mo takes cute little Yan Lang to the super market to cook for his family later on that night… So I’m guessing that Yan Lang was already off school by now, but seriously…
WHERE IS THE ADULT SUPERVISION HERE?!
Yan Song was barely at work, and just hanging out with her best friend Yue Yue. I know it’s tough being a single mom – and it’s just part of the drama where Yan Lang gets to go where ever he wants so he can establish the relationship with Qin Mo, but seriously, the lack of adult supervision is ridiculous. Qin Mo could be a damn pedophile for all she knows!
Cute Qin Mo is like a dad with custody with Yan Lang. He spoils him a bit with all the good foods that Yan Lang wants, and from that, asks Yan Lang what Yan Song’s favourite foods were. He finds out her favourite foods and makes her dinner.
Yan Song and Yue Yue come home and find Qin Mo in their house, with dinner all cooked and in their private space. They initially attack them, but stop when Yan Lang announced that he was the one that invited Qin Mo into their house.
They decide to let Qin Mo stay to have dinner (and apparently Qin Mo cooked a delicious dinner) and they’re having an amazing dinner until…
Annoying Lin Qiao shows up and crashes the party and ruin everything. At this point I am seriously very sick of his shit, but I mean, he is the antagonist in the drama, and at this point it’s only episode 5 or 6 or in the drama, so I guess there is more to bear. He insists that Yan Lang is his son (even though Yan Song has denied it over and over again. Finally, exasperated, Yan Song agrees to a DNA-blood test to determine if Yan Lang and Lin Qiao are related.
Meanwhile, even though Qin Mo is equipped with the good looks and cooking skills to charm a country of woman, he has no game at all. He continues to freak Yan Song out by claiming that he is her husband, and that he is Yan Lang’s father. Yan Song demands that he leaves.
Meanwhile Su Qi tries to plan again Yan Song by notifying Papa Lin about Yan Lang.
Papa Lin hates Yan Song and wants full control over Lin Qiao’s life, so Papa Lin proceeds to yell at Lin Qiao afterwards. This event kind of proves two things: Su Qi is supposedly manipulative – but honestly I don’t think Su Qi is that bad. I think that she is just really in love with Lin Qiao and really wants to be with him. I don’t think Papa Lin is a jerk either, because he just wants the best for his son, but he’s being typical abrasive parent too. If my son wanted to unnecessarily ruin his relationship with his fiance by adopting a son that he didn’t have to take responsibility for, I’d ask him to think that through thoroughly too.
SO FAR I am enjoying this drama… I’m not sure if my highlights/commentaries of this drama is doing this drama justice. I am actually so excited for all the new dramas coming about – there’s this one that came out today with Joe Chen. I think I can probably get pretty fit this summer since I watch dramas on my treadmill LOL.
Didn’t Yan Song believe that the high heels were bought by Lin Qiao (because it wasn’t signed, only a smiley face in the card)?
And I’m very sure Yan Song is the same girl in Qin Mo’s memories:
1. The necklace that is around Yan Lang’s neck.
2. Qin Mo having bought the pair of heels that Yan Song liked before she even had a chance to try them on.
3. Qin Mo recalling what Yan Song liked to eat.
Question is why she doesn’t remember him. From Yan Lang’s conversation with Qin Mo, Yan Song had a one night stand with Lin Qiao while Yan Lang was still a baby. Yan Song doesn’t even know who Yan Lang’s father is (and she’s sure it isn’t Lin Qiao).

REALLY! You’re so observant!!! For me, my theory is that Shen Nuo (the lady in the beginning) is actually a separate person, and that she is actually the twin sister of Yan Song and they were probably raised in separate families, and perhaps when Shen Nuo died or gave birth, she left the baby at Yan Song’s doorsteps or something… LOL I know it’s a bit far fetched but I think it would just explain why Yan Song doesn’t remember Qin Mo at all since she doesn’t have amnesia either… BTW did you see today’s episode with Ou Yang?! Qin Mo’s real identity o_o

Of the 4 Hawick dramas out this summer, Twice Blooms the Flower was the drama I was most interested in when I saw the trailers. I found out it’s based on a novel by Tang Qi Gong Zi. Searched the net to see what I could find…suffice to say, the drama further peaked my interest because the drama team tweaked the storyline to also have Qin Mo lose his memories (they might have even changed his career). I didn’t read the novel yet, only searched for a brief synopsis, but I’ll read after completing the drama to see the differences.
And yes, saw episodes 8-9. That was a quick turn of events.

I hope and wish you’ll show this drama with English Subtitles. It’s so depressing when you’re watching a good movie, and can’t read nor understand a thing!
