IT’S SHAN SHAN!
I was pretty excited to get started on this drama because Shan Shan from Shan Shan Comes to Eat is in this drama! Zanilia Zhao, the lead actress in this drama and that one is quite naturally cute and pretty. She kind of reminds me of Ariel Lin (even though I love Ariel so much more) in terms of her vibe – she’s very young-looking, pretty, and naturally cute. Wallace Huo is pretty handsome in this drama too, except I am really not digging the olden day feudal hair style on him – I think he’s a pretty boy, but he’s too pretty to have long hair – he actually looks really feminine with that hair. Still handsome though.
DISCLAIMER: I am a native Cantonese speaker, and I’m usually good with conversational mandarin, but some parts of this drama I really could not understand, since it was in ‘feudal-olden-day’ style, and some of the words are made-up for the plot. I’ll do my best to do a fair (and concise) recap :3.
Our story starts with adorable baby being born. The little baby used for this episode was so darn cute – look at her! Her laugh is adorable.
Unfortunately, this little baby is a cursed child – she’s like the the ouiji board of humans – she attracts monsters/evil with her negative aura, and her blood will make plants wither and die too.
Qing Xu, which is this leader of a certain clan (ok I am very sorry and apologetic that I couldn’t catch the clan name but that is not of importance yet) places a certain spell on her that suppresses this baby’s aura temporarily until she’s sixteen.
The dad is so grateful for Qing Xu for helping the baby that he offers to allow Qing Xu to name her… to which Qing Xu named her Hua Qian Gu. And I could not stop laughing during that scene because it seemed like zero f*cks were given LOL. Qing Xu didn’t even ask for the dad’s surname.
Dad: Please name my baby!
Qing Xu: I shall name her…. Hua Qian Gu.
Dad: …. My surname is Chen.
Qing Xu: HUA. QIAN. GU.
HAHA but no seriously, I haven’t read the book, so maybe somehow Qing Xu had known beforehand.
************* 16 years LATER *************
We meet our incredibly handsome Wallace Huo and his name is Bai Zi Hua. He was just handpicked by his leader to be the next leader of the Chang Liu Clan.
Obviously our male lead wouldn’t be complete without some crazy-ex baggage. His crazy-ex, a member of the same clan, was upset that he accepted the promotion, because it would mean that they couldn’t be together.
We meet Yi Xiu Jun – this crazy looking guy with an incredibly creepy mask over his face.
He has planned revenge against Bai Zi Hua because him and his clan had murdered his father. Unfortunately Bai Zi Hua is incredibly strong, so Yi Xiu Jun could not get revenge. In this scene he states that revenge is close, because tonight Bai Zi Hua will meet Hua Qiang Gu.
Hua Qian Gu was on her way to town to look for the doctor, as her papa was very sick. She needed to find him medicine. Bai Zi Hua on the other hand, had to enter into mortal realms in order to ‘train’ and ‘meditate’.
Their eyebrows are on point.
The villagers arrive and they’re looking to burn Hua Qian Gu’s house down because they think that she killed the doctor. They’ve also never liked her before because of her negative aura, and think that she’s bad luck.
Hua Qian Gu and Bai Zi Hua are about to get killed by this mob and Bai Zi Hua couldn’t do anything because he’s not allowed to use magic in the mortal realms, until crazy-ex shows up and saves him (albeit in a ‘crazy-vindictive-ex’ style).
Hua Qian Gu’s papa passed away once Hua Qian Gu had turned 16, and had told her in his last wishes for her to go to Qing Xu to become his student.
Vindictive-ex points out that Bai Zi Hua has the capability to save Hua Qian Gu’s papa, but didn’t because of the clan’s rules.
LONG STORY SHORT: In these series of very cute scenes, Bai Zi Hua introduces himself as Mo Bing to Hua Qian Gu because she isn’t supposed to know his true identity if he’s in the mortal realms. They spend a few days together and he tries to teach her some martial arts.
The incredibly handsome Bai Zi Hua returns to the magical-looking Chang Liu. I must say… I like Wallace better in a modern look. I think he’s too pretty to have long hair – he already has such feminine features that it makes him look… well… too feminine.
Hua Qian Gu sets off on her journey to get to Qing Xu. She has trouble crossing a certain barrier because it is intentionally blocked off to prevent the entrance of mere mortals/enemies. She also unintentionally shows off her naked body while taking a bath to a scholar. This scholar, Dong, is obsessed about marrying her afterwards, because he wants to take responsibility for seeing everything.
I think Hua Qian Gu is SO CUTE with Dong because she keeps running away, but he manages to show up and find her over and over again. She hides behind a tree at one point, and eats carrots, and he suddenly pokes his head in.
It was such a funny scene because she kept spitting the carrot into his face. And I was so fascinated that that she was eating a white carrot like that… like those are pretty spicy/gross when they’re raw too.
Dong finds out that Hua Qian Gu is having trouble crossing through the barriers and he suggests that she goes to ask the Yi Xiu Jun since he has the answers to everything.
Hua Qian Gu meets Yi Xiu Jun and is surprisingly not as freaked out as she should be by the creepy ask. She asks him how she could possibly get through that barrier to get to Qing Xu’s clan.
Yi Xiu Jun gifts her a necklace that has a mixture of her blood and phoenix’s tears and told her that the necklace will allow her to pass through the barrier.
Hua Qian Gu also asked one last question: how will she be able to ever find her ‘friend’ again (meaning Bing Mo)? Yi Xiu Jun reveals that he will be in Chang Liu, and Hua Qian Gu happily goes on her way.
Of course this is all in Yi Xiu Jun’s plan of course, to get Hua Qian Gu close to Bai Zi Hua (this is why I think Dong is planted by him).
Hua Qian Gu makes it through the barrier, and heads to Qing Xu’s clan, Shu Shan (ok I looked it up – Qing Xu’s clan is Shu Shan). Except the bad guys had already gotten there… There other groups of clans that are evil, to which that I will affectionately name them the Evil Seven. They went to Shu Shan to not only murder Qing Xu, but to find the treasure hidden there. There are treasures that are hidden with every good clan, and if you collect all the treasures you become very strong.
Hua Qian Gu is too late and Qing Xu is dying. He hands her the clan’s treasure which is a little box with a lot of history and secrets, as well as a feather that signifies that she is the new clan leader.
LOL when I saw the feather I was like woah. That is a very unsubstantial item to give… I mean it looks so fragile and so squishable. It also looks very replaceable too… Couldn’t they have found a more special-looking feather?
Yun Yin, is like “AHA!” at this point. He is one of Shu Shan’s disciples, and he actually betrayed Shu Shan for the Evil Seven. He has been waiting all along for Qing Xu reveal where the little treasure is. He’s about to kill Hua Qian Gu for the treasure, except…
Bai Zi Hua shows up obviously. He was notified by his disciples of the slaughtering and he picks Hua Qian Gu up while fighting off the other guys. Bai Zi Hua notices that his power diminishes when he touches Hua Qian Gu.
With Bai Zi Hua’s power diminished, they were captured under this web-like dome. The dome became smaller with time. The bad guys from the Evil Seven had to use this method instead of actually capturing Bai Zi Hua because he was so strong. The bad guys waited outside while the dome slowly restricted and trapped Bai Zi Hua.
Bai Zi Hua leaves the restrictive dome and comes out with a vengeance and fights the two guys that slaughtered Shu Shan. The fighting doesn’t stop until the boss of one of the clans part of the Evil Seven comes and apologizes for what his underlings has done, and slaughters his underlings to make up for the death of Shu Shan.
The boss gives back the treasures at the same time, and Bai Zi Hua decides to leave it at that so he doesn’t have to cause so any more deaths.
Our episode ends with Hua Qian Gu realizing that Bai Zi Hua is one of the leaders at Chang Liu and begs for him to accept her as his student. He refuses, and tells her to wait three years later, when they are accepting students and essentially have tryouts.
SPOILER: Ok I thought entering Chang Liu would be extremely difficult since you’re going to essentially become nearly godlike/fairy-like after getting to the next level but the three events for try outs are nearly nothing. Try writing exams for four years in university to get into med school – Chang Liu is children’s play compared to that.
1800 words later… That is only EPISODE ONE.
Recapping this drama is actually quite difficult since the feudal language is so difficult to understand sometimes, and there are so many characters, weapons, details, and names of groups that I couldn’t possibly do this drama justice. I had so much trouble following along and trying to remember who’s who.
Plus, since it’s based on a book, it’s not as fun making fun of a plotline.
Even though I really wanted to recap this on this blog (this is the first drama that I’ve stopped recapping since Lan Ling Wang :O) it’s just way too time-consuming and the quality of my recaps for this drama wouldn’t be able to be detailed enough to do it justice so I’m gonna drop it and recap other blogs. I really tried to understand it by watching four episodes in to try to get used to the names, but it was way too complicated (plus, too much work!).
It’d still be a good watch though – I mean, all you need to know is the gist of things – who are the bad guys, who are the good guys right? It’s pretty obvious since the bad guys usually wear dark colors and have atrocious make-up. I’ll be recapping other dramas instead, like Twice Blooms the Flower, and Destined to Love You with Joe Chen. I’ll still watch this drama so leave a comment if you are watching it too and we can discuss plotlines in the comments :3.
I created a gallery below of screencaps up to Episode 4 – since I watched up until there, and had planned to do its recaps before realizing this drama was much too complicated with its details/language for me to do it justice.
